A History of Jingle Bells The classic Christmas song "Jingle Bells" was written in 1857 by New England born composer James Lord Pierpont. If you pay attention to the lyrics, you'll notice a lack of specific references to Christmas - the song was actually written as a celebration of Thanksgiving. The carol has the distinction of being the first song broadcast from outer space - on December 16, 1965 astronauts on the Gemini 6 played a version of the song to Mission Control using a smuggled harmonica and sleigh bells. Jingle Bells is public domain, making it freely available for recording and printing.
